SOCIOLOGICAL STUDIES OF THE CLASSROOM is a group of research which is part of the UIDEF, Institute of Education, University of Lisbon. It emphasises the sociological perspective in educational analysis.
Although centred on sociology, the research developed by
ESSA
has an interdisciplinary character. Its focus is
thus broadened to other areas of the social sciences.
From the analytical and methodological point of view,
ESSA
uses innovative theoretical and empirical
instruments. Within a line of action-research, it privileges the promotion of
school success. Through the study of the many contexts of which the students are
part and also through the study of the spaces of change of the portuguese
educational system, ESSA
seeks to develop and implement innovative and efficient school pedagogic
practices. THE MAIN
OBJECTIVES OF ESSA ARE:
Research is
particularly centred on the primary and secondary school
levels and in the area of sciences, although it is extended
to other levels and to other areas of the curriculum.
Within sciences particular attention is given to the relation between science
education and construction of science.
The instructional context constitutes a major dimension of the research. The
study of the regulative context, with its crucial importance in education, is
